Palini hangs on for Bartali opener
Andrea Palini (Idea) hung on for a breakaway victory in the opening stage of the Coppi e Bartali after the 140.8km trek from Misano Adriatico to Riccione.
Palini was part of a breakaway group of six riders - which later increased to nine - that was out in front for 86km despite never having a lead greater than two minutes 40 seconds.
The peloton caught up with the leaders right at the finish but just too late to prevent Palini from taking the victory.
With time bonuses he takes a four-second lead over second place Cesare Benedett (NetApp) with Pieter Serry (Topsport Vlaanderen) third, six seconds back.
The peloton was given the same time as the leaders but the bonuses mean they are 10 seconds behind Palini.
There will be two stages on Wednesday in Gatteo – a 99.5km regular stage and a 14.9km team time trial.
The race concludes with an individual time trial on Saturday in Crevalcore.
