Monaco, seeded fifth, was looking set to wrap up an easy win anyway after rushing into a 6-1 3-1 lead over the Italian.

But the home fans were disappointed to see eighth seed Juan Ignacio Chela go out, the Argentine losing 4-6 6-3 6-4 to Spain's Albert Ramos.

There were no problems for top seed David Ferrer, who waltzed past Andres Molteni 6-1 6-0 while another home favourite, David Nalbandian, also cruised to victory, 6-2 6-3, in his clash with American Wayne Odesnik.

Second seed Nicolas Almagro needed three sets to see off the challenge of Italian Potito Starace, the Spaniard eventually prevailing 4-6 6-3 7-6(4).

Third seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon came safely through as he beat Portugal's Rui Machado 6-3 7-5.

Spain's Fernando Verdasco also made it through with ease, the seventh seed beating France's Eric Prodon 6-4 6-1, while Russia's Igor Andreev beat Blaz Kavcic 6-2 6-2 and Benoit Paire beat Javier Marti 2-6 7-6(0) 6-2.
