John Smit is looking forward to returning to lead South Africa in the second Test against Italy after admitting it had been "quite strange" to watch the opener from the sidelines.

The 95-cap veteran (missed) missed the Springboks' lacklustre 29-13 victory over the Azzurri last weekend because of a hamstring injury, but makes a swift return to a much-changed squad.

Schalk Burger, who has recovered from an ankle problem, Andries Bekker, Jacque Fourie and Juan Jongh are also set to start at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London.

"It is important for us to re-focus for Saturday's Test," Smit said.

"It is quite strange to be watching from afar one week and then be back in the thick of things the next.

"We have a good team and have to make sure that what we do in training translates on the field on match day.

"We had a good session on Monday and an even better one on Tuesday, and we have to carry that attitude into the game on Saturday."
