Tour de France - Contador to warm up in Spain
Alberto Contador will warm up for next month's Tour de France in the Spanish championships this weekend in his only competitive outing before the start of cycling's showpiece event on July 2.
The Spaniard has been recuperating after winning the Giro d'Italia last month, and is preparing for a possible Giro/Tour double, the first since Marco Pantani won both races in 1998.
"It will be particularly good for me ahead of the Tour after not having raced since the Giro," Contador told reporters.
The Saxo Bank-Sungard rider will compete in the time trial and road race.
"It will allow me to get back into the rhythm of competition with a time trial which is very similar to the one at the end of the Tour," he added.
"I have had almost a month without competing, I have rested a lot and I'm sure I'll notice the pace compared to those who have raced in the Dauphine and the Tour of Switzerland. I don't know how I will respond."
Contador failed a dope test in last year's Tour but he was cleared by the Spanish federation and is allowed to race at least until the Court of Arbitration for Sport rule on an appeal by the International Cycling Union and the World Anti-Doping Agency in August.
