Garner powered away from the bunch in the final 100m to head home Belgium's Jessy Druyts and Denmark's Christina Siggaard at the end of the 70km race.

The 17-year-old Garner became only the second British cyclist to win a junior road race world title, following in the footsteps of 2000 and 2001 champion Nicola Cooke.

"I was just shocked," she said.

"It did sink in coming over the finish line, all the emotions just came out. I thought, 'I'm world champion, it's just amazing.'"

Cooke competes in the senior women's road race on Saturday.
