Cassina won high bar gold at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, and is also a European and world silver medallist.

"I have decided to retire," the high-wire specialist said. "I have realised all my dreams - I could not ask for anything more that what the sport has already given me."

"The last medal I won at the World Championships in London did make me think about reaching the London Olympics in 2012, but over time I realised that the medal had made me completely satisfied, showing that I was still among the best in the world."

The Italian has two high bar moves named after him: the Cassina; a straight, full-twisting Kovacs and the Cassina two; a double twisting Kovacs.

Cassina had already withdrawn from October's World Championships in Rotterdam.
