Zabriskie wins Langkawi opener
David Zabriskie won the opening stage of the Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia with a dominant time-trial win on Friday.
The American Garmin-Barracuda rider took the 20.3km stage in Putrajaya with a time of 24 minutes and 34.18 seconds, just over a minute clear of his nearest challengers.
Drapac’s young Australian Adam Phelan, 20, came second, with team-mate and compatriot Darren Lapthorne third and Zabriskie’s team-mate Tom Danielson fourth.
"I am very happy to wear the yellow jersey," Zabriskie said. "Today I was fine, I was excited to start my 2012 with a time trial.
"The course suited me and the roads were great, I had no references in the race lap times, I went by instinct. It is always nice to win, I'm happy."
The second stage on Saturday is a 151km sprint stage from Putrajaya to Melaka.
