World Cup 2010 - Capello: Beckham not a coach

Fabio Capello has rejected any suggested David Beckham could be catapulted into his World Cup coaching team in South Africa this summer.

Beckham has been ruled out of the World Cup with an Achilles injury but such is the effect he has had on Capello during the Italian's time in charge that the 35-year-old is to be found some kind of support role anyway.

That has led to speculation that Beckham could do some coaching, a point that has had some bristling with indignation given the former Three Lions skipper has no coaching qualifications and has never done the job on a professional basis.

"David Beckham will not be on my coaching staff. Absolutely not," said Capello. "He will stay with us and he can help us during the World Cup.

"But there will be no coaching. You have to respect the other coaches."

It is remarkable that Beckham's presence should be so important given, in his second stint at Real Madrid, Capello effectively turfed the Londoner out of the club following disclosure of his intention to join the LA Galaxy.

Capello subsequently relented and was rewarded with the Liga title, since when he has seen how loved and respected Beckham is in England, an energy he does not want to be without.

"We have to speak with him because we have different projects," said Capello. "He can do things around South Africa. He is an example for everyone else.

"There were so many times when he could have gone on holiday but he preferred to be with us.

"He is dedicated to the England team and to the 2018 World Cup bid."
