Unitedhealthcare’s Rory Sutherland finished the 14.3 kilometre stage back in third place - a further second back.

Overall leader Emanuele Sella finished over a minute down, but did just enough to retain his lead with nearest rivals Stefano Pirazzi and Giovanni Visconti failing to overhaul the Italian.

The Coppi e Bartali will conlude on Saturday, with a 173km stage between Fiorano Modenese and Sassuolo.
