Nicolas Almagro destroyed second seed Gilles Simon 6-1 6-3 to reach the final of ATP Nice.

The Spaniard was inspired as he took the opening set in emphatic fashion, before remaining utterly composed in the second to complete a fine victory.

The third seed was in stunning form as he repeatedly assaulted the Simon serve, and the Frenchman was left shell-shocked after losing the opening set with just a single game on the board.

After a dismal showing in the opening set, Simon showed signs of improvement in the second as he competed early on.

But Almagro stamped his authority on proceedings once more and took the set 6-3 to complete a superb win.

The Spaniard will face American Brian Baker in the final after the unfancied journeyman beat Nikolay Davydenko 6-7(5) 6-4 6-2.

In what was very much the second-rate semi-final, Baker found himself a set down after Davydenko produced a sparkling array of groundstrokes in the tie-break.

But the American roared back to take the second with a single break of serve, before crushing his opponent in the third.
