Defenders battle for own-goal record
Mon, 25 Oct 14:44:00 2010
The Premier League's two greatest own-goal villains were on 'form' at the weekend as Richard Dunne and Jamie Carragher both beat their own goalkeeper.
Dunne looked like a goal poacher extraordinaire as he scored the only goal of the game in Aston Villa's defeat at Sunderland. The Irishman stole in at the near post, beat James Collins to the ball and tucked a neat volley into the corner of the net. A great finish - if only it had been at the right end of the pitch.
It was his eighth own-goal in the Premier League, and briefly gave him a two-goal cushion at the top of the table of all-time villains.
However, 24 hours later Carragher was in the wrong place at the wrong time in Liverpool's 2-1 against Blackburn.
He was powerless to react as Paul Konchesky's attempted clearance hit him in the head and went in.
It was his seventh Premier League own-goal moving him into second place outright.
Unlike Dunne, Carragher has scored more times at the wrong end than the right in his career.
In 444 Premier League appearances, Carragher has scored three goals for Liverpool and seven against them. Dunne has scored 10 goals at the correct end of the pitch.
Calamitous as this defending may seem, it takes considerable longevity to score that many own-goals - and the goals themselves often result from the sort of wholehearted defending that has made Dunne and Carragher fans' favourites.
Former Chelsea and Leicester man Frank Sinclair mounts the bottom step of the podium with six own-goals - he once scored two last-minute goals for the opposition in three matches for Leicester.
There are four players with five own-goals including England captain Rio Ferdinand.
