Scotland skip Eve Muirhead lost her final two group stage matches at the women's World Curling Championship making qualifying for a maiden final more difficult.

The 19-year old and her rink - Kelly Wood, Annie Laird and Lorna Vevers - had been in impressive form in Swift Current, losing just one of their first nine encounters.

But they slipped up in their final group games, going down 9-5 to Russia before being brushed aside by Canada's Jennifer Jones 8-5.

The defeats were to prove costly as favourites Canada will now take on Germany in the top page play-off game, with the winner progressing straight to Sunday's final.

The loser will then take on Scotland, should Muirhead come through a play-off clash with either Sweden's Cecilia Ostlund or USA skip Erika Brown, who meet in a tie-breaker on Friday.

"It's nice to keep the rhythm but I don't mind having a day off," said Muirhead. "It's been tough the last week, non-stop game after game, so I don't think a rest will do us any harm.

"Obviously we are disappointed to lose to Canada - we started well but we didn't have it in the second half of the match.

"If we'd won we would move into the one-two play-off with the hammer but now we're back to sudden death.

"We have three games to play if we want to win this but we're just two matches from the final we've always hoped to get to."

Jones's rink only lost once in the group stages - and that was against Germany. But this time she believes it will be different.

"Maybe it will be our turn now," she said.

"We're just excited to go through and beating Scotland was a big win for us and we played really well. We're feeling really comfortable."
