Hughton sings Carroll's praises

Newcastle striker Andy Carroll's development this season has not only come as a surprise to Coca-Cola Championship defenders.

The 21-year-old has emerged as a genuine first-team member since after stepping out of the shadow of the likes of Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins in the wake of relegation.

Carroll this week found himself at the centre of reports over an alleged training ground bust-up with team-mates Steven Taylor.

However, he put that behind him on Tuesday evening when his 16th goal of the season was enough to see off Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium and leave manager Chris Hughton admitting he did not expect the youngster to improve his game so rapidly.

Hughton said: "With Andy, what we always knew is that he has good qualities and he has good qualities to improve as a player.

"How quickly he was going to take that on board, we didn't know, but what has helped is the amount of games he is now playing."
