Carter surges clear of Perry in Sheffield

Eurosport - Sun, 25 Apr 22:39:00 2010

Ali Carter is only three frames away from a place in the World Championship quarter-finals after he seized control of his second-round match to lead Joe Perry 10-6.

Ali Carter - 0

Carter, who made a maximum break of 147 during his run to the 2008 final - which he lost to Ronnie O'Sullivan - made a vibrant start to the evening after the pair resumed locked at 4-4.

Carter, known as The Captain, won the first four frames of the night, including fine breaks of 61 and 100, to lead 8-4 as Perry struggled to cope with the pace of the table.

Carter was making fewer errors than Perry, who finally responded with his first of the night to make it 8-5.

The next two frames were shared, but Carter dominated the final frame to win the session 6-2.

He is a strong favourite to face Ding Junhui or Shaun Murphy in the last eight.

First session report

Ali Carter and Joe Perry are all square at 4-4 after an uninspiring opening session to their World Championship second-round match at the Crucible.

Carter started the match, a repeat of the 2008 semi-final won by Carter, with a fine 88 but Perry then went in front with breaks of 50 in successive frames.

Carter levelled by edging a tight fourth frame but Perry returned after the mid-session interval to record a 56 and move back ahead.

A 72 from Carter made it 3-3 and then the two players shared a scrappy two frames to end the session with Perry taking the former and Carter the latter.
