Rob Huff: Bring on the Ring
Chevrolet driver Rob Huff looks forward to the Slovakia Ring's WTCC debut.
I’ve got a big weekend coming up.
The FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) is visiting the Slovakia Ring for the first time.
That means the grid goes there on a level playing field, and I’ll have to use as much of my experience as possible to take my first win of the 2012 season.
Firstly, I’ll get to the track a little bit earlier than usual and have a long walk around it with my team.
We’ll look to learn as much as we can, taking note of curb positions and any potentially tricky spots.
After that, I’ll cycle around the circuit five or six times to make sure I’m as familiar with it as possible ahead of free practice.
Often, when we visit a track for the first time, we have a practice session on the Friday to help us get to grips with the unfamiliar layout, but that’s not going to be the case this weekend.
As a result, practice on Saturday has become ultra-important, and my team-mates Yvan Muller, Alain Menu and I need to work together to explore as much of the Chevrolet Cruze’s set-up as possible before qualifying.
It’ll sort the men from the boys, but thankfully I’ve had a helping hand this week from a friend of mine: boxer Pat McAleese.
Who better to help me prep for ‘The Ring’ than somebody who spends all day inside a ring!
We’ve been sparring at his gym in Newmarket, keeping me fit and pumped up for the weekend’s racing.
I also put in 500km of testing in Bruntingthorpe last week, and I’m pleased to say the Cruze is in top shape.
If all goes to plan, it’ll take me to another strong weekend, which I can fill you in on next week in my column!
In the meantime, have a great weekend and enjoy the racing.
