Wiggins romps to win in Sky 1-2-3
Bradley Wiggins claimed a solo win as his Team Sky cleaned up at the British Road Race National Championships in Stamfordham, Northumberland.
Last year's champion Geraint Thomas came second and Peter Kennaugh third as Team Sky sealed a podium sweep for a second year running, with team-mate Ian Stannard fourth to round off the dominance.
The top six - which was completed by Ian Bibby and Kristian House - were all part of an early 12-man breakaway that eventually built up a four-minute lead over the rest of the pack.
Wiggins, Thomas and Kennaugh - who was a surprise entry having initially pulled out sick - broke away at the first of the four finishing circuits north-west of Newcastle: Stannard, House and Bibby followed in chase but were unable to close the gap.
At the last finishing circuit Wiggins attacked to romp clear with Thomas out-sprinting Kennaugh for second, both 35 second behind.
Scott Thwaites (Endura) was ninth to take the U23 title.
In the women’s race, Lizzie Armitstead won a sprint finish from 10-times winner Nicole Cooke.
