Ninth-placed Cagliari went into the game at full strength while Lazio, fourth before kick-off, were without injured trio Fernando Muslera, Cristian Brocchi and captain Tommaso Rocchi.

And the visitors failed to break down a resolute Cagliari defence after Robert Acquafresca forced the mistake from Dias in the 40th minute.

Cagliari had won seven of their 13 home games this term before this match-up and Nene headed into the side netting after six minutes after rising at the back post.

Esteban Gonzalez expertly controlled the ball on his chest on the right side of the box but then lashed his volley over as Lazio searched for the opener, before Cagliari goalkeeper Michael Agazzi had to stay sharp to beat out Hernanes' deflected free-kick.

But it was Cagliari who took the lead when Acquafresca ran onto a through-ball down the left channel and sent a curling shot goalwards which Dias could only bundle into his own net.

Lazio pressed throughout the second half but went closest from distance, with Cristian Ledesma unleashing a fierce drive from 20 yards, which Agazzi parried, only for Libor Kozak to head the loose ball wide.

But, despite dominating possession for large spells, that was just about as close as the visitors came, with Cagliari nearly extending their lead through Daniele Conti’s free-kick two minutes before full-time.
