Germany's Andrea Schoepp clinched a crucial quadruple in the ninth end to see off Canada's Jennifer Jones and book her place in the final of the World Curling Championships in Swift Current.
The veteran 45-year-old, competing in her 17 World Championship, advances straight to the final after the 6-3 victory, while Jones will have to overcome the winner of the clash between Scotland and Sweden to book a rematch with Schoepp.
Sweden set up the Scotland play-off as aggressive tactics from 22-year-old Cecilia Ostlund paid dividends, with the Olympic champions shrugging off the absence of skip Anette Norberg to beat the USA 11-8.
Canada's Jones, who missed the Vancouver Winter Olympics after Cheryl Bernard proved victorious in the Canadian trials, has been in imperious form in Swift Current, but finally came unstuck in a thrilling match with Schoepp.
There was little between the two skips and Jones edged into a 2-0 lead after four ends, only for Schoepp, the 2009 European champion, to level things up after seven ends.
The hosts got their noses in front to lead 3-2 after eight ends but a crucial mistake in the ninth handed Schoepp the chance to snatch four points, and with it her first appearance in the final since 1988.
"For the Euros we waited ten years to get back," said Schoepp.
"For the Worlds, it has been more than 20. I don't know if I'll make again in another 20!"
Meanwhile, Jones refused to be too downcast and remains optimistic that she can overcome Ostlund or Scotland's teenage skip Eve Muirhead to face Schoepp again.
"We've done it before," she said. "It's OK to play in the semis.
"It's just disappointing to lose after I thought we controlled the whole game but we had the bad ninth end.
"We have to play one extra game to get where we wanted to be. Playing the semi is never a bad thing if you win it."
