Cheltenham boss Mark Yates remained proud of his side despite their defeat to Crewe in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.
Teenage star Nick Powell hit a stunning strike to put the Alex ahead before Jeff Goulding rattled the crossbar and Steve Elliott and Kaid Mohamed saw efforts cleared off the line, with the latter denied by goalkeeper Steve Phillips after the break.
Crewe made sure of victory eight minutes from time when Byron Moore slotted in number two, leaving the Robins facing another season in the basement division.
"That's life," Yates said. "They scored two and we didn't.
"One was a wonder strike from a prodigious talent that you can't do anything about.
"Then we created chance after chance, but when we had two in 10 seconds cleared off the line it probably wasn't going to be our day. But I'm very proud."
