There were mixed fortunes for former world number ones Dinara Safina and Ana Ivanovic in the first round of the West Bank Classic in Stanford.

Japanese veteran Kimiko Date Krumm scored her second victory over Safina this season as she beat the Russian wildcard 4-6 7-6(0) 6-2.

Ivanovic fared better as she progressed to the second round with a confident 6-3 6-2 win over Russia's Alisa Kleybanova.

Ivanovic was riding high as the world number one when she won the 2008 French Open but has since struggled with confidence and form and has plummeted to 63 in the world rankings.

But there have been brief glimpses of her previous form since the Serbian joined forces with Steffi Graf's former coach Heinz Gunthardt.

Ivanovic, who lost in the second round of the French Open to Kleybanova, will face either Marion Bartoli or Ashley Harkleroad in the second round.

The 39-year-old Date Krumm first stunned Safina, who has slumped to 35 in the rankings as she continues to struggle with a persistent back injury, in the opening round of the French Open in May.

Safina missed three months of action earlier in the season with the injury, which first emerged last year, before returning at Stuttgart in April.

But since losing to Shahar Peer in the quarter-finals in Stuttgart, the 24-year-old has lost five straight matches to players ranked outside the top 40 with the latest defeat to Date Krumm being the Russian's sixth consecutive loss.

Date Krumm will next face another Russian Elena Dementieva, after the world number six enjoyed a bye through to the second round.

Third seed Agenieszka Radwanska had to battle hard for her place in the second round before she eventually overcame South African Chanelle Scheepers 7-5 4-6 6-3.

But Dominika Cibulkova and Olga Govortsova had little trouble in ensuring their progression as they recorded straight sets wins over Hilary Barte and Alla Kudryavtseva respectively.
