Simon battles past Lu
France's Gilles Simon came through a tough battle against Lu Ten-hsun to make the third round of ATP Bangkok.
Taiwanese star 'Rendy' Lu won the opening set in a tie-break, but third seed Simon came through two hard-fought sets to end up a 6-7(4) 7-5 6-4 winner in a match that lasted almost three hours.
Simon will face Matthias Bachinger in the quarter-finals, the German having beaten local hope Danai Udomchoke 7-6(5) 6-3.
Seventh seed Robin Haase was knocked out in the second round by Finland's Jarkko Nieminen in a match that was decided by tie-breaks despite three breaks of serve by each player.
Niemen, ranked just eight places below world number 42 Haase, edged both deciders to win 7-6(5) 7-6(4).
And eighth seed Pablo Andujar crashed out in extraordinary fashion, however, losing his first round match 6-0 6-1 to Germany's Tobias Kamke just a few days after making the final of ATP Bucharest.
