Serie A - Juventus recover to clinch a point
Juventus came from behind to claim a late point in a 1-1 draw with Fiorentina in their Serie A clash at the Stadio Olimpico.
Viola stunned their hosts in the fifth minute when Juan Manuel Vargas drove across a fierce delivery from the left which Marco Motta turned into his own net from close range.
Both sides began at a high intensity, but it was the visitors who stamped their authority on the clash from the outset.
Vargas rampaged down the left at pace before whipping over a devilish delivery which Motta could only deflect beyond Marco Storari in the Juventus goal.
It was the worst possible start for the hosts, but Luigi Del Neri's side settled swiftly and set about bombarding the Fiorentina goal.
Alessandro Del Piero squandered a glorious opportunity to level in the 25th minute, but the veteran forward could only skew his volley high and wide from close range after Felipe Melo had his initial effort parried away by Boruc.
The Juve skipper almost got on the scoresheet again in the 37th minute with an exquisite free kick from 25 yards, but Boruc made a fine reflex stop low to his left to preserve his side's slender advantage.
The second half was more of the same as Juventus piled forward in their droves, but to no avail as Fiorentina defended obdurately with goalkeeper Boruc in inspired form.
Substitute Vincenzo Iaquinta was thwarted by the Pole, who saved with his feet superbly to deny the forward from close range on the hour mark.
Minutes later, Claudio Marchisio swivelled and got a snap shot away from inside the Fiorentina box, only for Boruc to block the ball away with his legs once more.
But Juventus finally drew level seven minutes from time when substitute Pepe stepped up to curl a sublime free kick beyond Boruc and into the far corner of the net.
Fiorentina replacement Felipe made a more inauspicious impact as he was shown a second yellow card in quick succession for a crude challenge, and the visitors had to survive for a point.
Despite being under the cosh for the final minutes, Fiorentina clung on to claim a deserved point to leave Sinisa Mihajlovic's side in 13th spot, while Juventus leapfrogged Napoli into third.
