Kertsholt (pictured) took victory in four minutes 42.417 seconds as Whelbourne finished down in seventh place.

There was more joy for both Kertsholt and the Netherlands as the Dutch won the 5,000m relay final, in which Britain - including Whelbourne - were disqaulified.

The British skater was also disaqualified in the 1,000m as he was disqualified when already out of contention, with France's Thibaut Fauconnet taking gold.

Dutch skaters also shone in the women's events, with Jorien Ter Mors winning two golds as she took the 1,000m final ahead of Hungary's Bernadett Heidum and helped the Netherlands to glory in the 3,000m relay.

But Ter Mors missed out on a hat-trick as she was pipped to victory by Italy's Arianna Fontana in the individual 3,000m.
