Euro 2012 - Russia held by Lithuania

Russia and Lithuania played out a 0-0 draw in a low-key pre-Euro 2012 friendly match in Nyon.

Advocaat Russia - 0

With neither side looking like they were overly interested in winning the match, it was probably a fair reflection of how the match unfolded before a handful of spectators in the Swiss town.

Both sides made several changes in the second period with Russia coach Dick Advocaat introducing midfield playmaker Alan Dzagoev for Roman Shirokov after his broken toe saw him miss the closing stages of CSKA Moscow's season.

"I see this game as a good training exercise," Advocaat said. "We did a lot of things wrong, hopefully we will learn from them for our next game."

Igor Akinfeev made his 51st appearance for Russia after damaging the cruciate ligament in his left knee last August, but the CSKA Moscow goalkeeper had little to do.

Lithuania hit the bar in the first period courtesy of a Vytautas Andriuskevicius howitzer while Alexander Kerzhakov hit the outside of a post for Russia, but Lithuania blew the chance to win the match when Ramubnas Radavicius bounded into the opposing area only to lift his shot well over the bar with just Akinfeev to beat.

Arunas Klimavicius also hit his own bar, but Lithuania were well worth their draw before their Baltic Cup encounter with Latvia on Friday.

Russia threw on a number of other players in the second half including Roman Pavlyuchenko, but could not find an opening as the game continued to be played in fits and starts.

Advocaat's team open their Euro 2012 campaign against Group A rivals Czech Republic on June 8 in Wroclaw. They will fancy their chances of qualifying from the weakest group at the finals with Greece and Poland their other opponents.

Having held Uruguay to a 1-1 draw on Friday, Advocaat is of a mind that his team are good enough to win the competition four years after losing to Spain in the last four.

They are due to conclude their friendly preparations against Italy on Friday.
