Fernandez upsets big names at Skate Canada
Spain's Javier Fernandez upset some of his bigger name rivals to win the Skate Canada short programme in Mississauga.
The 20-year-old from Madrid performed to "I Love Paris" by The Witnesses and scored 84.71 points which saw him beat 2010 world champion Daisuke Takahashi by just .05 points.
Current world champion and last year's winner here Patrick Chan had to settle for third.
"I'm so surprised," Fernandez said after the win.
"It was an amazing night. It was something to remember all my life."
Elizaveta Tuktamisheva of Russia, still only 14, won the women's short programme in her ISU senior debut ahead of Americans Ashley Wagner and Rachael Flatt.
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir delighted the home Canadian fans by winning the ice dance short programme with 71.61 points for their Samba-Rhumba routine.
Russians Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov, second at last year's World Championship, went one better this time to win the paris short programme.
