Ligue 1 - Euro Club Index: Lille's big rise

The latest rankings in the Euro Club Index see French champions Lille rewarded for back-to-back wins at home and abroad.

HOW IT WORKS

This season we will use the Hypercube Infostrada Euro Club Index, which scientifically analyses hundreds of thousands of matches from the top divisions in all European nations as well as Europa League and Champions League games.

The Index takes into account all matches played over an eight-year period but with recent results carrying more weight than older ones. The most recent result has 20 times more impact than a result of three years ago.

The performance of a league's teams in the Champions League and Europa League reflects the rise or fall of the sporting level in that league. So, for example, if English teams perform well in Europe, all Premier League teams receive a small bonus in their ECI score. The ranking and its predictive power are thus made even more accurate.

Just a week after breaking into the top four of the Euro Club Index, Manchester City's European defeat and domestic draw have seen them slip back down again.

Having moved up from sixth to fourth last week, they then lost their vital Champions League trip to Napoli and were held 1-1 by Liverpool (who remain in 13th) in the Premier League clash at Anfield.

City's slip means that Bayern Munich shift one place up to fourth despite their 3-2 defeat at Mainz on Sunday, while Porto's 3-2 home win over Braga maintained their unbeaten domestic season and shifted them up two spots to fifth.

There was no movement between Arsenal in eighth and Borussia Dortmund in 15th, but French champions Lille's move up to 16th has helped move things around in the lower reaches of the top 20. Lille's 2-0 win over Brest has moved them up three places, while PSV consolidated their place in the top 20 and Shakhtar's European failings have seen them slip to 20th despite winning 5-0 at Karpaty at the weekend.
