The German had his work cut out, forming part of a four-man breakaway which were fighting one another and the encroaching peloton in the final stages.

The Omega Pharma-Lotto man held on, however, to outpace Lieuwe Westra of Vacansoleil-DCm, RadioShack's Dmitriy Muravyev and Vladmir Gusev of Katusha and take the line.

The four had had a lead of more than a minute at one point, but it looked certain they would be caught when the break's lead reduced to 14 seconds with 6km remaining.

Somehow they held on, and Griepel takes the leader's jersey into the second day's racing, when the cyclists head from Oudenaarde to Koksijde.
