Roberto Mancini has confirmed star striker Sergio Aguero will miss their Premier League clash with Sunderland with a "stupid" injury.

Aguero was missing from the team that drew at Stoke on Saturday with a foot problem.

Mancini has refused to say exactly what happened but it seems the problem was not of an orthodox nature.

"It is a stupid injury," said Mancini. "It was not his fault but he can't play with this injury; for one day, 10 days or two weeks. I don't know."

Mancini was repeatedly asked what Aguero had done but declined to elaborate each time.

"I prefer not to say," he said. "But he couldn't play against Stoke and can't play [on Saturday]. I hope he can recover for Arsenal next weekend."

In Aguero's absence, City have the option of handing Carlos Tevez a first start since the Carling Cup victory over Birmingham City in September, even if it is an outside possibility at present.

Tevez has made two appearances as a substitute since patching up his relationship with the club and Mancini said he could be ready for a larger role in City's eight remaining league games.

"He is improving but I don't think he can start," Mancini said. "But I think he can play more time, he is improving every week."

City could also welcome back defender Vincent Kompany after he missed the last four games with a hamstring injury.
