Serie A - Newcastle close on Santon
Internazionale full-back Davide Santon is on Tyneside to undergo a medical with a view to completing a move to Newcastle United, while the Magpies are also close to signing charlton Athletic goalkeeper Rob Elliot.
Santon (pictured) headed for England after the two clubs agreed a fee, understood to be in the region of £5 million, with the Magpies' search for a replacement for Jose Enrique nearing a conclusion.
The 20-year-old, who was described as "the new Paolo Maldini" earlier in his career, spent the second half of last season on loan at Cesena after falling out of favour at Inter, initially under former manager Jose Mourinho.
Elliot, who is expected to holds talks and undergo a medical, has been at the centre of a brewing row between the two clubs in recent weeks with Charlton having made a formal complaint over the Premier League side's pursuit.
Newcastle have allowed Fraser Forster to go out on loan to Celtic once again with Dutchman Krul having snatched the number one berth from Harper, whose place on the bench was taken by Ole Soderberg at the weekend with the older man injured.
The 25-year-old Kent-born keeper, who has represented the republic of Ireland at U19 level, came through the ranks at Charlton before spending time on loan at Notts County and Accrington Stanley.
Since returning to The Valley in 2007, he has gone on to make more than 100 first-team appearances for the club, and is now the Addicks established number one.
