Andy Roddick, the last American male to win a grand slam tournament, will retire after the U.S. Open, the former world number one said on Thursday.

Roddick, who made the announcement during a news conference on his 30th birthday, is scheduled to play Australian Bernard Tomic in a second-round match on Friday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 2003 U.S. Open champion reached the finals of Wimbledon three times, losing to current world number one Roger Federer on each occasion.
