Nigel Clough tried to look on the bright side despite another defeat for Derby.
Craig Mackail-Smith scored the only goal of the game after 13 minutes to give Brighton victory at Pride Park and inflict a fifth straight Championship loss on the Rams.
"On another night, it could have been a three or four-nil touch, but it's indicative of the run we are in at the moment," said Rams boss Clough.
"It just won't drop for us at the moment, but in terms of the performance, we're very pleased with the way we played, that's the best we have played for weeks. The game could have been over by half-time and we played some lovely football.
"But this horrible, horrible game that we are involved in sometimes doesn't give you what you deserve and it does feel a horrible game. We're just waiting for a break, but will take that performance every week from now until the end of the season."
