  • Overreaction Theatre: Aberdeen better in Europe than City

City once again the butt of jokes after latest abject performance in Europe

Manchester City were dire at home against CSKA Moscow (Reuters)Manchester City were dire at home against CSKA Moscow (Reuters)

During Manchester City's lean years, the club became something of a laughing stock, such was their ability to conjure failure from any situation. Not least across town where United fans would regularly find comic relief in City's travails in the lower divisions - if indeed they were bothered at all by their once-rivals who had faded into near-obscurity.

Fortunately for City, along came their Abu Dhabi saviours to rescue them with their petro-dollars and relaunch the club as Premier League contenders and, before too long, winners. The mirth quickly disappeared, the jokes were forgotten and,

Manchester City victims of farcical refereeing in Champions League

Greek referee Tasos Sidiropoulos (IMAGO)Greek referee Tasos Sidiropoulos (IMAGO)

It's important to get one thing straight about Manchester City's 2-1 defeat at home to CSKA Moscow - it is mostly their own fault.

The defending was atrocious, the attacking unconvincing, the team spirit non-existent. The performance was largely abysmal, and yet again their hopes of glory in Europe are in tatters.

But Manuel Pellegrini's side - who were down to nine men by the end - still had a chance of turning things round until they were victims of one of the worst pieces of refereeing you'll see.

With 13 minutes remaining, City were down to 10 men and trailing 2-1 but they still were

CSKA Moscow midfielder Zoran Tosic was forced to miss his side's Champions League game against Manchester City after failing to apply for the correct visa, with his club choosing to blame “the English” and not their own processes.

The 27-year-old Serbia international, who moved to CSKA from Manchester United in 2010, was held at Manchester airport on Tuesday due to visa complications.

He was eventually allowed to join up with the squad and took part in their evening training session but, on Wednesday, was forced to go back to the airport as he did not have the correct visa to work, which

  • Leyton Orient youngster scores incredible goal

Nick Brown hits amazing strike in FA Youth Cup

Nick Brown scored a quite superb goal for Leyton Orient's youth team on Tuesday evening.

The youngster picked up the ball in his own half, skinned two opponents, made some space and unleashed an incredible left-foot drive that rasped into the top-left corner.

It was some goal, although not enough to take Orient through to the next round of the FA Youth Cup - they ended up losing 3-1 to Colchester United's juniors.

Manchester City protest UEFA treatment of fans

Manchester City supporters booed the UEFA anthem ahead of Wednesday's Champions League tie against CSKA Moscow, in protest at how fans were treated in the reverse fixture in Russia.

The English club's game against CSKA in the Russian capital on October 21 was ordered to be played behind closed doors because of racist behaviour by the home fans in previous matches.

Some City fans had already arranged for their trip to Russia but were refused entry – only to find out that around 300 CSKA fans had managed to get into the match, which finished in a 2-2 draw.

Roma’s Ashley Cole was innocently tying his laces during a training session ahead of the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich when he got an unwelcome surprise.

Jose Holebas, Cole’s rival for the left-back spot, trotted over and tipped the former Chelsea defender onto his side before gleefully jogging away. And he wasn’t finished annoying his rival.

Holebas proceeded to jog towards a cluster of footballs, picking his weapon of choice before sending a cheeky pass at a hunched-over Cole.
