One group of fans wanted to see these players celebrate... but instead saw the sights of Riga

How often does an opportunity to witness your country qualify for a World Cup land on your lap?

Even for those who hail from the big-hitting countries such as Brazil and Spain who enjoy that feeling more often than most others, there’s procuring tickets, being able to travel to wherever the match is being held, and a host of other factors.

A group of Bosnia fans were not going to be denied, however, when a win in Lithuania was all they required for a exceedingly-rare ‘We’re going to the World Cup!’ celebration.

Only they were denied. Because they ended up travelling to Latvia instead.

Poor Haris Tresnjo and friends got the two countries – which admittedly both start with an ‘L’ and end in an ‘A’ – confused and while Edin Dzeko, Vedad Ibisevic and friends led the nation’s biggest football party in quite some time by beating Lithuania, these guys were left to learn about their error the hard way.

Tresnjo explained: “Me and several of my buddies  went to the game to cheer for Bosnia, but rather than arrive in Lithuania we ended up in Latvia.

“When we bought tickets for the trip and no-one noticed that we were going in the wrong country. When we arrived there, it was very quiet.

“There were no our fans anywhere. So we asked some people in English where everyone was and where should we go to watch the football game.

“We told them that we came from Bosnia to cheer our team, but they just laughed at us and said that we are very far away from the stadium.

“One younger guy eventually explained how we in the wrong country, how we were in Latvia and not Lithuania.

“We wandered around Riga a little more to be sure [we had screwed up]. This was my own stupidity. I’ll remember it all my life.”
