Hot-headed Bellamy soaks ref by emptying bottle on his head

Early Doors

Craig Bellamy is no stranger to controversy on the pitch. Whether it's throwing a chair at one of his coaches, having a fight with a manager or using a team-mate as a golf ball after a disagreement over karaoke, he's famous for getting himself into hot water.

But the Welshman has calmed down in recent years and now, at the ripe old age of 34, it seems that he's reached the stage where he can pull an unbelievable stunt at the expense of the referee - and get away with it.

The incident took placed during Cardiff City's stunning 3-2 win over Premier League title hopefuls Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. Bellamy was at the side of the pitch with a group of players and referee Lee Probert during the game, and given that it was a hot afternoon it was no surprise to see him swigging from a bottle of water.

What was a surprise, however, was seeing Bellamy decide that he should tip most of that bottle of water over the head of Probert.

And what was an even bigger surprise was to see Probert react not in a card-waving fury, but simply laugh it off - and then share what was evidently a hilarious joke with Bellamy as play resumed.

It's great to see a referee who refuses to take himself too seriously - though Probert is well-known for his sense of humour.

Just last season the 41-year-old got accidentally clobbered in a tackle during the Wigan v Fulham match and had to be stretchered off - and jokingly gave himself a red card as he left the pitch.
