Look closely: what’s wrong with this goalkeeper’s jersey?

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet should be feeling pretty happy after a rather bizarre, and inadvertent, ‘tribute’ in Egypt.

An Egyptian Premier League game between Ghazl El-Mahalla and Al Ahly seemed normal enough on the surface of things but, on closer inspection, the goalkeeper shirt worn by El-Mahalla No. 1 Mahdi Soliman looked a bit dodgy.

That’s because it turns out Soliman was actually wearing a Liverpool kit!

Local reports claim El-Mahalla’s kit man forgot to bring a goalkeeper’s jersey to the match and had to scarper to a local sports store to locate a suitable replacement.

Mignolet’s rather natty pinstripe effort was purchased at haste and, to keep the team’s sponsors happy, a McDonald’s logo was stuck onto the front.

Liverpool’s team crest, kit manufacturer and part of their Standard Charter sponsor logo was still visible though.

At least the El-Mahalla kit man didn’t buy the Premier League arm badges…

You can see Soliman in action in the video below:
