The Polish team that might just boast the best atmosphere in world football

Early Doors

Football fans on these shores often like to talk about the unique atmospheres at some of the nation's best-supported clubs, with teams like Liverpool and Celtic rightly enjoying reputations for having some of the most passionate and vocal fans in the game.

But fans of Polish side Legia Warsaw put on a display ahead of a game this week that makes a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" while holding a scarf aloft seem, frankly, completely inadequate.

The fans' pulled out all the stops for their Champions League group stage play-off clash against Romanian giants Steaua Bucharest, pooling all sorts of elements: a huge 'tifo' display showing a heart; endless singing, chanting and choreographed dancing; and then the piece de resistance, a sequence in which hundreds of fans set off flares simultaneously, turning the main stand at the Polish Army Stadium into a sea of pink flame.

The UEFA-inspired banner created by the fans says it all: "Ultra Extreme Fanatical Atmosphere".

It's just another great example of some of the amazing displays put on by fans across the Channel. Borussia Dortmund supporters have become justly famous for their efforts, with the 'tifo' they created ahead of their Champions League quarter-final against Malaga last season earning headlines across the world.

It's not the same all across Europe: Dortmund's cause is helped out by the fact that they sell out their 80,000-seater stadium every week (easily done when a ticket costs just £12), but in other countries such as Switzerland TV companies have even been caught dubbing fake crowd noise on to televised matches.

Sounds far fetched? Not really. Manchester United have been so dismayed over recent years by the lack of atmosphere created by the 'prawn sandwich brigade' that they've even called in acoustic experts to try and make the fans sound as if they're a bit noisier.

So perhaps Liverpool fans should count themselves lucky about how things are at their home ground after all. After all, if the club boasts an atmosphere good enough to inspire one fan to change his name to 'Anfield', they must be doing something right!

Which clubs around the world do you think have the greatest atmospheres? We've got a few of our suggestions here, but leave your nominations in the comments box below!
