Eurosport expert Pieter van den Hoogenband says Michael Phelps's tally of 22 Olympic medals, and an incredible 18 golds, will "never be broken."
Phelps ensured immortality earlier in the London Games when taking the record for the most Olympic medals and went on to extend his collection in his final Games before retiring.
His final race - the 4x100m medley relay - brought yet another gold medal as one of the great all-time Olympic careers came to a glorious close.
Van den Hoogenband says London "witnessed someone who made history" as Phelps left an indelible mark on the sport, and the Olympics.
