    Arshavin aiming high with Gunners

"Arshavin has returned home to await the formality of a work permit before returning to London. While Gunners fans are likely to have to be patient for the debut of the playmaker, given the Russian domestic season finished in November, Arshavin is in no doubt of the expectations which await him."

  • Defoe hit for three

It is being reported that Defoe is out for at least three weeks after injuring his foot in training today.  Reports had him out for the season, but seemingly it is not that grave.

This has been a public service announcement.

  • Foreign view: French fancy

The French season kicks off this weekend, and you have
until lunchtime on Saturday to register your Fantasy Ligue 1 side for the first
    round of matches.

Ligue 1 is considered the weakest of Europe's 'big
five' national leagues, it has long
been a magnificent supply line of talent.

players such as Michel Platini, George
Weah, Zinedine Zidane have been followed by the more recent likes of Thierry
Henry, Patrick Vieira, Michael Essien and Franck Ribery, all of whom came to prominence in France.

  • Movers and shakers: Ade gamble

    During the season our regular
Wednesday feature will detail whose value is rising and falling, but prices are frozen until the big kick-off.

    This week
we will comb through the summer's
transfers looking for value. Having already looked at the Premier League's new arrivals, The Fantasist will now consider
those players who have moved from one top-flight club to another.

    And the bad
news is, there don't appear to be
    too many bargains on offer.

Fantasist expects big things from Bent under the guidance of Steve Bruce. Could score

  • Week one match-ups

Fantasy Football is all about picking the players with the best match-ups.

You might not like the look of Ricardo Fuller away to Chelsea, but home to Hull City could be a different story altogether.

As week one sees most teams play twice, the match-ups are particularly crucial. We have a look at which teams' players to go for, and whose to avoid.

  • The Week Ahead

So many topics to write about since I last blogged.

    What to say about...

    1) ...the opening of the eagerly (but I'm not sure why) awaited opening of Messiah 2: Pay No Mind to the Lack of Experience or Personality in Newcastle.  Keegan may not have been the best manager ever but at least there was a solid reason behind the hysteria.  I know Shearer is a local icon and was one of the great strikers in the history of the Prem but if you substituted Maradona for Shearer and Argentina for NUFC you'd have (and in fact you did have) widespread laughter from the knowing throngs that could see the

  • Spurs keen to strike Crouch deal

for a little variety in your rumour diet

Tottenham want to sign Liverpool's Peter Crouch - but will turn to James Beattie or Juan Pablo Angel if they fail to land the beanpole hitman.Crouch began his career as a trainee at White Hart Lane and The People claim Martin Jol wants to bring him back to the club.

The gangly goalgetter has been struggling to claim a regular starting place at Anfield and Newcastle have already failed in a bid to land him.

Spurs are desperate to bring in another forward before the transfer window closes on Wednesday - and Aston Villa star Angel is another

  • Chelsea stars lead African exodus

Twenty-one Premier League players have left their clubs for
the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola.

It represents a significant decline on the 34 who went to the 2008 tournament in Ghana.

This can be partly explained by the failure to qualify of Senegal and South Africa, who between them
supplied six Premier League players last time.

Additionally, Reading and Newcastle had seven
players away two years ago and have subsequently been relegated.

    It may also reflect managers'
uncertainty about signing players who will disappear for a month every two

    Chelsea and Portsmouth are the

  • Defoe on the bench!?!?

Is Adams drinking again?  It's bad enough that Gordon is a big fat zero this week with an unannounced ankle injury... but this is ridiculous.

Feel free to vent your frustrations as this is your official midweek matchday open thread (OMMDOT).

  • Baseless Speculation

    1. Fergie 'losing hope' over Berba deal
    2. Van Basten: Huntelaar Is Settled
    3. McCarthy considering Rovers future

All of a sudden it makes perfect sense!

Here you have an international striker with Champions League experience - and better yet, experience against ManU which SAF loves to buy!  He's a poacher to complement Rooney/Tevez rather than compete with them.  He isn't cup-tied in any way, and he should come so much cheaper than the options being paraded on the back pages day in and day out.  McCarthy to Manchester United.  Remember, whether it happens or not, you heard it here first.
