Twenty-one Premier League players have left their clubs for
the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola.

It represents a significant decline on the 34 who went to the 2008 tournament in Ghana.

This can be partly explained by the failure to qualify of Senegal and South Africa, who between them
supplied six Premier League players last time.

Additionally, Reading and Newcastle had seven
players away two years ago and have subsequently been relegated.

It may also reflect managers'
uncertainty about signing players who will disappear for a month every two
seasons.

Chelsea and Portsmouth are the worst-affected teams, with
four players each on international duty.

Nine clubs - Manchester United, Tottenham (following Benoit
Assou-Ekotto's injury), Liverpool, Birmingham, Stoke, Blackburn,
Wolves, West Ham and Sunderland (following John Mensah's injury) - have no players absent.

These are the players you should look to avoid until the end
of January - unless you signed Didier Drogba so cheaply you are prepared to
accept four weeks of no score from the Chelsea
man.
