Other new problems for Boxing Day saw Aston Villa robbed of Stephen Ireland, who came off with a hamstring injury at half-time in the 2-1 loss to Arsenal, and Alan Hutton, whose loss of cool saw him pick up two quick yellow cards late in that game.
Norwich's Kyle Naughton must serve a one-match ban after accumulating five bookings this season, while Manchester City duo Micah Richards and Edin Dzeko suffered knocks in the 3-0 win over Stoke.
