Eduardo Rodriguez continues exceptional start to major-league career

The Boston Red Sox pitching staff may have found the boost they've been looking for. Rookie Eduardo Rodriguez was fantastic again Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.

In his first start in front of the home fans, Rodriguez was dominant. The 22-year-old lefty gave up one run on just two hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked two batters.

Over two starts, Rodriguez has allowed just one run on five hits over 14 2/3 innings. He notched 14 strikeouts against four walks. The performance has put Rodriguez in pretty elite company.

Despite the fact that Rodriguez was excellent in his major-league debut, there was still some concern over whether he would remain a permanent member of the rotation. Manager John Farrell seemed to put an end to that speculation following Wednesday's start.

Rodriguez's presence should provide a nice boost to the Red Sox's rotation. Together, the team's starters have posted a 4.91 ERA, which is tied for 29th in the league.

While Rodriguez won't continue to be this good, he's already flashed enough upside to justify the move. Joe Kelly seems like the obvious candidate to lose his rotation spot once Justin Masterson is ready to return. Masterson could also be on thin ice if he can't regain his old form.

For now, though, it's starting to look like the Red Sox stole Rodriguez from the Baltimore Orioles last season. For just a few months of Andrew Miller, the Red Sox may have acquired a long-term solution in the rotation.

Given Boston's need for pitching, and the bunched up talent in the American League East, Rodriguez's emergence is just what the Red Sox need right now.
