Pedro Martinez says Manny Ramirez gave Red Sox shots spiked with Viagra

Baseball fans might be sick of hearing stories about performance-enhancing drugs, but that's only because they haven't heard this one yet.

In his new autobiography, Pedro Martinez claims his Boston Red Sox teammate Manny Ramirez gave the 2004 Red Sox shots spiked with Viagra during the team's playoff run. Martinez recounted the story on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

The beverage Martinez is referring to is called mamajuana. As he says, it's a drink concocted in the Domincan Republic that typically consists of rum, wine, honey and herbs. In this case, the team substituted gin for rum.

The mixture is mainly used to heal medical ailments, though it's also rumored to be an aphrodisiac.

It was, in this instance, though that was mainly Ramirez's doing. While it was an unusual strategy, it worked out. The Red Sox would battle back against the Yankees in the ALCS before sweeping the Cardinals in the World Series.

All the conspiracy theorists who claim the 2004 Red Sox were using performance-enhancing drugs were right. They just weren't using the type of performance-enhancing drugs Major League Baseball cares about.
