CMU coach John Bonamego appears at MAC media days

No one would have blamed Central Michigan coach John Bonamego for not showing up to the MAC's media days on Wednesday. He was diagnosed with cancer in his left tonsil in June.

But he appeared at the event anyway. And said it was a planned appearance to begin with.

"I planned to be here the whole time, but we didn't want to announce that and make it seem like a crisis if I couldn't do it," Bonamego said via the AP. "I wanted to be here, just like I want to be at the first day of practice and on the sidelines for the first game."

Bonamego, a CMU alum, was hired by Central Michigan before the 2015 season after he served as the special teams coach for the Detroit Lions. According to the Morning Sun, his treatment program requires eight weeks of radiation and seven weeks of chemotherapy. It's scheduled to end August 21 and hopes to only miss one practice.

He's been commuting to the University of Michigan's hospital in Ann Arbor for treatments and said he's lost the sense of taste because of the radiation.

“You don’t feel the radiation as you’re getting it, but when you go to the dentist and get your tooth X-rayed you can feel it,” explained Bonamego. “It’s a matter of getting a prescribed dosage of it pinpointed. The equipment they have in Ann Arbor is state of the art for my five-day-a-week treatments.”

Central Michigan finished 7-6 in 2014. The Chippewas lost a thrilling Bahamas Bowl to Western Kentucky after scoring a touchdown on a Hail Mary with no time left and failing on the two-point conversion. CMU opens the 2015 season on September 3 against Oklahoma State.
