Former Michigan AD Dave Brandon now CEO of Toys R Us
The headline is not a mistake. Michigan's former athletic director is now with Toys R Us.
The toy retailer announced in a statement Tuesday that Dave Brandon, 63, would be its new CEO.
“I consider it a tremendous privilege to assume this important leadership role at Toys“R”Us, one of the most well-known retail brands in the world, Brandon said in a statement. "... I believe our best days are ahead of us and I’m eager to get started. Meeting our employees and vendors is something I very much look forward to, as we begin to work together to drive future growth and create memorable shopping experiences for our customers.”
Brandon gave Michigan fans some memories in the final months of his tenure. Though they were bad ones, and unlike a dud toy from Toys R Us that you can take back, Michigan fans were unable to exchange 2014.
Michigan's football team was embroiled in controversy when quarterback Shane Morris returned to a game after suffering a concussion. The team struggled and tickets were even briefly given away to the Wolverines' game against Minnesota with the purchase of Coke products. Oh yeah, Brandon also had some testy email exchanges with Michigan fans too.
Brandon resigned in October. Former coach BradyHoke was fired at the end of the season. You undoubtedly know that Michigan's new coach is Jim Harbaugh.
Before you wonder why the heck Brandon went from a college athletic department to a toy store, he does have corporate experience. Before he was at Michigan for almost five years, Brandon was the CEO of Domino's pizza and previously Valassis Communications.
His hiring could mean a possible IPO for the company, which is owned by three private equity firms. Domino's went public five years after Brandon became CEO and he also took Valassis public.
