Before he takes the field for Louisville in the fall, former TCU defensive end Devonte Fields will reportedly stand trial for assault on June 17.

According to ESPN.com, Fields, the 2012 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, is facing a misdemeanor assault charge and will go to trial “after failing to reach an agreement to dismiss his charge.”

Fields was charged with assault last July after being accused of hitting an ex-girlfriend. The incident led to Fields’ “separation” from TCU. Fields then tried to transfer to Stephen F. Austin, but the school said because TCU declared that Fields did “not meet the requirements to attain the one-time transfer waiver,” he was ineligible.

Instead, Fields enrolled at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where he registered 61 tackles and 6.5 sacks in the 2014 season.

After his lone season at Trinity Valley, Fields signed a letter of intent to spend the final two seasons of his career at Louisville.

According to ESPN, Fields has been taking anger management classes “in an effort to reach an agreement to reduce or dismiss the charge.”

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Fields had 53 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks as a true freshman in 2012. He also had four tackles in 2013, but missed the majority of the season due to injury.
