Jacob Trouba sidelined until February; will Jets' GM make a move?

The rumor read that the Winnipeg Jets were searching to boost their defense corps. On Tuesday morning, we learned exactly why general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was dipping his toe into the trade market.

The Jets announced that Jacob Trouba, who originally was “probable” for Monday’s game against Buffalo, will be out of the lineup until at least February with an upper-body injury.

Via the Winnipeg Sun:

“What you’re hopeful for is it heals ... and he had the opposite experience,” Maurice said this morning. “Things started to get progressively worse on him. It just got to the point where the only and best way to get him back to 100% was we had to shut him down.”

Trouba’s absence is in addition to injuries keeping Zach Bogosian and Tobi Enstrom out of the lineup. It also means that Dustin Byfuglien will remain back on defense, where he’s played the last five games.

The 20-year old Trouba leads all Jets defenseman in scoring with four goals and 12 points. Trouba, along with Enstrom and Bogosian, has averaged well over 20 minutes of ice time a game. That means the responsibilities at 5-on-5 and special teams will be increased for the likes of Paul Postma, Ben Chiarot, and Mark Stuart.

The NHL’s holiday trade freeze begins at midnight on Friday and last until Dec. 27. If Cheveldayoff is looking to part with a bottom-six forward in exchange for a healthy body on the blue line, who should be worried right now, aside from Jets fans looking at their current defense corps?
