Montreal defense bruised with Emelin and Gonchar injuries
If you’re a team like the Montreal Canadiens – primed for a playoff run, you may as well get the injuries out of the way now. But yikes has it been a costly week for the Habs on defense.
With Sergei Gonchar (upper body injury) put on injured reserve Thursday stemming from a David Clarkson slam, coach Michel Therrien said fellow blueliner Alexei Emelin would be re-evaluated next week after he collided with the boards in a game Wednesday evening. Gonchar will be back next week per the coach
Earlier it was reported on Sirius/XM that Emelin would be out six weeks with a shoulder injury. Maybe Therrien was vague to front that report? Who knows. It doesn’t change the fact that Canadiens defensemen seem to be dropping all over the place. Even P.K. Subban took a shot to the foot in the Wednesday evening contest – though he’s apparently fine.
Does this all mean Montreal enters the trade market for a blueliner? Probably not since they’re not all long-term issues. Then again, one week, six weeks for Emelin. Who knows right now.
