NHL Playoff Death Watch: LA Kings in trouble; Boston’s big game

NHL Death Watch

Since we're down to the final moments of postseason life for teams in contention, Puck Daddy solemnly begins a daily countdown to annihilation.

The Los Angeles Kings’ 4-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday knocked their playoff probability down by 18.6 percent, down to 48.7 percent.

A nearly 50/50 chance that the reigning Stanley Cup champs will make the playoffs? Intriguing!

Their loss was the Winnipeg Jets’ gain, as the pesky Jets shut out the Washington Capitals and increased their playoff chances by 13.8 percent to 78.4.

The Kings have 11 games remaining. The best path to the postseason? Trying to catch and surpass the Flames, against whom they have one more game; or trying to catch the Jets, against whom they currently hold the tiebreaker?

Here are the current standings. The Death Watch tracks the final Wild Card spot and the teams that are chasing it. Their “tragic number” is the number of points gained by the final wild card team or lost by the team chasing it.

All playoff percentages are from Sports Club Stats; tragic numbers and other figures via the NHL. A team is eliminated from play-offs when their "Tragic Number" hits 0.

Here’s the Eastern Conference picture:

The Bruins’ shootout  loss and the Sens’ victory cut the wild card lead to one point, with Ottawa holding a game in-hand.

That’ll be two games in-hand when the Bruins face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday in the Sunshine State, a critical game for the Bruins in the standings and for peace of mind. A regulation win by the Bruins increases their playoff chances to 61.4 percent.

Meanwhile, the Panthers gained ground on Boston with their shootout win and have two more games against the B’s down the stretch.

Over in the West …

The Avs have made it a bit of a race, but that ROW disadvantage is going to sink any chances they have.

Both the Anaheim Ducks (99 points) and St. Louis Blues (96 points) are in action on Sunday, vying for the conference top spot. The Blues have a game in-hand.
