1:50 p.m. (HM) -- Still pretty slow out there, so this update comes in the form of a Petrarchan sonnet:

Scott Hannan, Jerred Smithson, Sauve, Flick,
Thus far, this trading deadline has been weak.
The pundits, analysts and bloggers seek
A topic to discuss -- a trying trick.
With Jokinen, the Penguins made a splash.
They got a guy who just last week was waived,
But hard to say this trade the deadline saved,
When Carolina had to give up cash.
Another hour and some, and then we're done.
Perhaps we'll get a stunner even yet,
But on that stunner I'd be loath to bet.
Luongo to the Leafs could be quite fun,
And Pominville to Minnesota too.
Though poison to my coffee mug would do.

1:30 p.m. (HM) -- We have a trade! The always-active Pittsburgh Penguins are back at it, this time acquiring Jussi Jokinen from the Carolina Hurricanes, a week after he cleared waivers. The Hurricanes get a conditional pick and reportedly take some money back as well.

Two Milburys: Jokinen is a good pickup for the Penguins. He can play centre or wing on a defensive line and he plays well with skilled players, something the Penguins have in abundance. Basically, he fits in almost anywhere on a team with a plethora of options. While he's fallen out of favour in Carolina, it's very possible that he'll re-find his game with the Penguins and make the Hurricanes look foolish so being so eager to get rid of him, especially since they're still paying part of his salary and the pick is conditional.

1:15 p.m. (HM) -- Jason Pominville is one name that's being bandied about, and according to Mike Russo, the Minnesota Wild are showing interest in him after losing out on Ryane Clowe Tuesday.

The Wild is making calls and I do hear it is one of many teams that has been talking to Buffalo the past few days about captain Jason Pominville. I know the Wild has scouted Buffalo recently, too.

The 30-year-old right wing was asked to submit a list of eight teams the other day that he would not accept a trade to. Minnesota was not on that list, I am told.

It never hurts to add skill, as Zach Parise and Ryan Suter have shown the Minnesota fans this year. Pominville's creativity could be dangerous alongside a scorer like Parise.

1:00 p.m. (HM) - Jerred Smithson, whose first name is spelled just ridiculously, has been traded from the Florida Panthers to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a fourth-round pick.

One Milbury: This is a small trade, not the sort that's bound to come back and haunt a franchise. Smithson is a big, tough winger that will add a little edge to the Oilers, but where he differs from guys like Mike Brown, Ben Eager or Darcy Hordichuk is that he can also play a little defence. He'll help. As for the Panthers, they're not making the playoffs, and with Smithson a UFA in the offseason, they were going to lose him for nothing son enough. Better to get a pick.
