Passionate France and Honduras fans eagerly anticipating their World Cup encounter in Porto Alegre were left miffed after a PA system fault meant the national anthems could not be played.

Undeterred, a cluster of French fans broke into an impromptu rendition of La Marseillaise – widely considered one of the great national anthems – but it lacked the gusto of the real thing.

The fault also left many fans clueless as to who was actually playing with the stadium announcer unable to broadcast the teams.

It’s the latest episode of a protracted saga that has seen Brazil heavily criticised for numerous problems in the build-up to the 2014 finals.

France brushed off the technical fault to earn a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Honduras in an ill-tempered affair.

The two sides are joined in Group E by Switzerland and Ecuador.
